Privacy Policy

The short version. SubCap does not ask you to create an account and does not sell your data. Your videos stay on your device. To generate captions, only the audio track of a video you choose is sent to our speech-to-text provider, transcribed, and then deleted by them. Purchases are handled by Apple and our subscription provider — we never see your payment details. The app also reports crashes and anonymous usage events so we can fix defects and see which features get used.
1. Who we are
SubCap ("SubCap", "we", "us") is an iOS application that adds animated captions to videos. This policy explains what the app does with information when you use it.

2. What the app processes

What we do not collect
- No account, name, email address, or password — SubCap has no sign-in.
- No advertising identifiers (no IDFA), no ad networks, and no advertising or profiling use of anything we do collect.
- No contacts, precise location, microphone, or camera access. Our analytics provider may infer an approximate country or region from the network address a request arrives on; we do not receive or store finer location than that.
- No browsing history or cross-app activity. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission because it does not track.
3. Device permissions
- Photo library (read) — only to let you pick a video to caption. iOS may show a limited-selection picker; SubCap sees only what you choose.
- Photo library (add) — only when you tap Save, to write the finished captioned video back to your library.
You can revoke either permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos. The corresponding feature will stop working, but the rest of the app continues to run.
4. Transcription and third parties
Caption generation requires a network connection. When you start a transcription:
- SubCap extracts the audio track from your selected video into a temporary file on your device.
- That audio file is uploaded over HTTPS to AssemblyAI (assemblyai.com), which returns the transcript text and word timings.
- The temporary audio file is removed from your device, and AssemblyAI deletes the uploaded audio after processing in line with their own data policy.
Nothing accompanies that upload but the audio: not the video itself, not its filename, not your photo library, and no identifier of you or your device. AssemblyAI acts as our processor and is contractually prohibited from using your audio for its own purposes.
Our other service providers:
- Apple — App Store distribution and payment processing.
- RevenueCat — subscription state and receipt validation.
- Google (Firebase) — crash reporting through Crashlytics and product analytics through Firebase Analytics, as described in section 2. Firebase assigns each install an app-instance identifier so events from one install hang together; it is not the advertising identifier, it is not linked to your name or any account, and it is reset if you delete and reinstall the app. We have not enabled Google's advertising or audience-export features.
We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.
5. Retention
- On your device: projects, videos, and captions stay until you delete the project or delete the app. Deleting the app removes all of it.
- Uploaded audio: retained by our transcription provider only as long as needed to process the job, then deleted.
- Subscription records: kept for as long as your subscription is active and afterwards as required for tax, accounting, and dispute resolution.
- Crash reports and usage events: retained by Firebase under Google's own retention schedule — crash data for up to 90 days, analytics events for up to 14 months — after which they are deleted or aggregated beyond any link to a single install.
6. Legal bases (EEA / UK users)
- Performance of a contract — processing your audio to produce captions and managing your subscription.
- Legitimate interests — keeping the app secure, preventing abuse, fixing defects through crash reports, and understanding feature usage in aggregate. We limit this to an app-instance identifier and never combine it with advertising data.
- Consent — device permissions, which you grant and can withdraw in iOS Settings.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, port, or restrict processing of your personal information, and to object to it. Because SubCap holds essentially all of your content locally and has no account system, you can exercise deletion yourself by removing projects or deleting the app.
For anything held by our providers — for example subscription records — write to arjeshvadadoriya@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. EEA and UK users may also complain to their local data protection authority. California residents have the rights described in the CCPA/CPRA; we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined there.
8. Children
SubCap is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Security
Transfers to our transcription provider use TLS. Project files live inside the app's sandboxed container, protected by iOS file-level encryption when your device is locked. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, transfers out of the EEA or UK rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or another approved safeguard.
11. Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. The "Last updated" date above always reflects the current version, and material changes will be announced in the app or in the App Store release notes.
